Audio Data - how do I access?

Hi
I’m pretty new to this and would like to be able to take audio data (from an mp3 / stream) in realtime to control things like lights and motors on my pi2.

I’ve had a good search on Google but can’t seem to find much info in this area.

Any help / pointers would be appreciated.
