Broken reset button on cosmic unicorn display

I managed to accidentally break the reset button on my cosmic display. At the same time, it wont start up, although occasionally I get a few red pixels in different locations. Interesting my laptop is now complaining its drawing too much power. I don’t need a reset button, but it would be nice to salvage this. To me since reset buttons should just be grounding it, an absence of a button should not do this. Any ideas or am I buying another display?

Broken off completly? If part of it is still there maybe it’s shorted out. Post a picture of the missing switch part of the board, close up if posible?

@alphanumeric: click on the picture and you can see it

@Socraticcyborg:

The reset button is only for resetting the Pico. If it is off, the system should work as always, you just cannot reset it anymore. Judging from your picture, two pads of the button are shortened. That should be no problem if these are shared pads (buttons usually have 2x2 pads, shared in pairs).

What you should check: with a multimeter, check the level on the run-pin (physical pin 30) directly on the Pico2. It should read high without the button. Also, check the levels on the pads of the reset button.

Ops, was lazy, didn’t click the picture. Looks, to me, like there is still a metal reminent of the switch / button left behind. If you have access to a soldering iron I’d see if it can be removed.

Done, but no impact. This is what it looks like now https://photos.app.goo.gl/fgZ18RTboNYSw5eJ7

This is fine. But if you look at the traces, the solder you removed was between already connected pads anyhow. So this was not the cause of your second problem (the display not starting up).

When you connect your display to the laptop, do you see a new serial interface (com-port or /dev/ttyACM0)? If you connect while pressing the boot-button, do you see the drive to load a new firmware? If any one of the answers is no, something more fundamentally is broken.

Boot select is not working, nor is it seen in the computer in my ide. When i plugin the only thing that happens is exactly 5 leds light up red.

That’s bad news and you probably can’t do anything about it. Was there a major impact that did not only strip off the reset button, but maybe also damaged something else?
