Inky Impression 13.3" (Spectra 6, EL133UF1): is the E Ink Ripple waveform possible?

Hi! I have an Inky Impression 13.3" (Spectra 6, 1600x1200, driver inky_el133uf1).

E Ink announced “E Ink Ripple” in March 2025: a waveform for Spectra 6 that
replaces the full-screen flashing with a wave-like transition. Some products
with what looks like the same 13.3" Spectra 6 panel seem to refresh that way.

Looking at inky_el133uf1.py, the driver sends the image data and a single
display refresh command, with no waveform/LUT upload, so I assume the waveform
lives in the panel’s driver ICs.

Questions:

  1. Do the driver ICs on the 13.3" Impression support the Ripple waveform, or
any alternative waveform selectable by command?
  2. If not, is it something a future hardware revision could bring?
  3. Is there any supported way to load a different waveform on this panel?

Thanks!

You should check the drivers from Waveshare and Seeed-Studio. They use the same kind of panel. If it really is the same panel is unclear.

Loading the LUTs is basically sending a command over the wire followed by the LUT data. Most panels have builtin LUTs, but also allow the MCU to send their own.

Usually there is no publicly available datasheet, so you are left with reverse engineering a driver and repeated trial and error. I had my fun with e-inks and LUTs and the results were a mixed bag. But at least I did not brick my displays (yet). I probably wouldn’t dare to it on one of these very expensive displays.
