I need to use the new 15.6” R Pi official monitor with my Rasp Pi4B and want to buy the correct PSU for the monitor and the correct USB to Micro-USB cable. I think I’ve got the HDMI cable sorted but can’t find a 5v PSU with a USB-C cable (only 5.1v ones). Can you use a 5.1v PSU? I was always taught that the voltage had to be exactly correct for the item, particularly when it involves monitors. Please someone let me know.
Yes, any of the USB-C PSUs that we sell will be fine to power the official monitor.
The Official Pi Power Supplies are 5.1V at the power supply output Pin (inside it’s case). Under load you lose ~ 0.1V as it goes through the cable which gives you ~ 5.0V and the Power Supply Plug Tip. ;) Well within the spec for the Pi and or Monitor.
That was done to prevent the Pi flashing a “low voltage detected” message. The on screen flashing “Lightning Bolt”. Remember those, I do, lol. I laugh now, but it wasn’t all that funny then.
Buy a Raspberry Pi Monitor – Raspberry Pi
Powered by (your) Raspberry Pi
The Raspberry Pi Monitor can be powered by your Raspberry Pi or other device via USB, getting you up and running with minimal set up. To harness your monitor’s full potential, pair it with an official Raspberry Pi Power Supply.
EDIT: Keep in mind, that if you power it directly from the Pi’s USB Jack, you get a reduced Max volume, and reduced Max Brightness.
