Made a Yoshi “neon” sign with adafruits noodles and a tiny fx controller activated with the PIR sensor.
Covered the noodles in clear heat shrink so they could be glued to the wood. I’m sure someone with arts and crafts skills would be able to lay out the noodles better, surprised I don’t see more of this kinda thing.
I have a couple of Tiny FX’s here. So far just some fiddling around with LED dots. Noodles are on my wish list though.

LED dots on an Xmas tree or mario mushroom would work really well in the same manor.
I have a string of these, 5m Flexible RGB LED Wire (50 lights) run by a Plasma Stick on a small artificial Christmas Tree. My wife really likes it.
I use the star version of those with a spark motion mini for a backdrop behind our PC monitors. Great products.
I have the PIR Stick and the Multi Sensor Stick. Just have to get a Round 2it. ;)
