Unicorn Hat excessive spazzing

#1

My unicorn hat has been acting up lately… but its always worked before. Whenever I try to run one of the example scripts, the lights flash extremely fast and in a non-coherent fashion - but they all do light up. Has anyone else ever run into an issue like this with their unicorn hat?

I’m running the latest Raspbian Jessie which I just picked up off the Raspberry Pi website and I did a fresh install of the OS. I always do an update and an upgrade after a fresh install too. As for my unicorn hat, I always grab the latest version from the repository and install using the instructions provided.

Edit: I read something strange about needing an HDMI cord plugged in for the unicorn hat to work correctly. The source mentioned audio and PWM but I’m clueless when it comes to hardware. I usually just use a VNC or SSH to communicate with my pi, but I can keep one end of the HDMI cord connected to the pi if that’s the issue…

it sounds like your audio output has not been routed away from the default analog interface.

If you ran curl https://get.pimoroni.com/displayotron | bash it should have done it for you, but you can force it to HDMI with the following:

curl https://get.pimoroni.com/audio | bash, and choosing option 3.

… and, no, you don’t need an HDMI display connected, this works for some because what it does is automatically redirect the audio to HDMI in that scenario.
