HyperPixel 2.1 Round Display installation help / Pi 5 compatability

Hi everyone,

I have a Pimoroni Hyperpixel 2.1 Round Touch Display.
product link
link I bought from ages ago…

i’m trying to use it with my Raspberry pi 5 if possible but i cant find any information online whether it’s compatible or not.
I also have been trying to get it to work with my Pi zero 2 w and my pi 3B with no luck.

I have 2 displays, one is brand new and the other one has a little bit of damage, it was sitting on my shelf and the shelf fell down, the screen de-laminated from the base but the ribbon cable looks good, show’s a grey screen, in the past i got the screen to work after the de-lamination / i got the touch to work but the screen didn’t then i got the screen to work and such.

if someone could let me know if there are other instructions I need to follow, if the legacy display drivers (which say for Pi 4 only!) is the ones i should use and if anyone knows if i can use my Pi 5

pretty please, i don’t want to take out the new one and risk damage plz help ;-;

It should just be a case of following the instructions on the product page you’ve linked to - add the dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dpi-hyperpixel2r line to your config, make sure all your interfaces are disabled and you’re good to go.

I have seen one other person struggling with a Hyperpixel on the very latest PiOS (trixie), so it might be worth trying a slightly older (bookworm) OS if you’re having trouble.

Of course, if you’ve dropped the display so hard that the screen came off, it’s hard to know if it’s suffered other damage.

thank you, ill try switching up some stuff. will post results. maybe even take out the new one.

update:

I have plugged in the brand new screen into my raspberry pi 5 running bookworm and it doesn’t work.
I have plugged it into my raspberry pi 3b version 2 running 32bit bookworm aswell with also no luck.

I used raspi-config to disable every interface apart from SSH and VNC and I add dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dpi-hyperpixel2r to the end of /boot/firmware/config.txt

new screen looks like the broken screen when plugged in, see photo.
