Phat DAC - RCA & 3.5mm jack - Analogue VU meters

Hello,

Can I please ask:

  1. Is there any noticable difference in the signal quality between the two output options (RCA vs 3.5mm jack) ?

  2. Can the two outputs be used at the same time ?

The reason I am asking is that I have a couple of “old-school” analogue VU meters and I am unsure of how to connect them. I am initially thinking of making 3 seperate connections

  • Connect Phat DAC with amplifier (3.5mm jack to 3.5mm jack)
  • Connect Phat DAC Right RCA channel to “right” VU meter (negative to negative, positive to positive)
  • Connect Phat DAC Left RCA channel to “left” VU meter (negative to negative, positive to positive)
Will this work or is there a better way to do this?

Anyone? Should I just test it out myself?

There shouldn’t be any difference in signal quality at all- it’s the same signal just split to both connections if I’m not mistaken. None of the outputs are amplified, and I don’t know if they need to be to drive a VU meter- never actually tried hooking one up!

This is definitely something you should hook up and test yourself! Oh and post the results back here or in a blog post, because I’m sure they’ll interest someone.
