Pirate Audio not working on Trixie OS Pi 3b

Hello,

This is for information for anyone that’s recently purchased a pirate audio and tried it on the latest Trixie release 1 Oct 2025.

I followed the installation instructions and took the latest recommended clean Raspberry Pi 64 bit OS Trixie released 1 Oct 2025 from the Pi image tool.
Raspberry Pi 3b with Pirate Audio 3W stereo.

Then followed the installation instructions.

However it didn’t work at all. Display doesn’t work - just pixilated. I could get test sound out via aplay, but not through mopidy or Iris. I could also play a local web browser radio station through the hardware once sndberry was selected.
I couldn’t find anything wrong mopidy configuration wise. Everything a clean install. Mopidy appeared to be configured. Iris would connect - sometimes.

After lots of debugging, checking forums, seeing that you have recently updated the software- I finally tried installing a clean legacy Bookworm 64 bit release - I Oct 2025 from the Pi image tool. (Pi 3b). Then reinstalled the pirate audio as per the instructions.

This worked first time, display worked. Had to select the Hifiberry Snd option on the desktop, but works perfectly. Iris connects, Home assistant connects, streams perfectly with artwork.

So you may need to check your installation for Trixie - or recommend people use legacy Bookworm as a workaround. At least that’s on a Pi3b. I haven’t tried on other hardware. For me it’s fine to use Bookworm as I want to put in an old radio, but it might save somebody a day bashing their head against the wall.

Thanks for the heads up!

I’ve updated the Github readme and the Learn Guide to more explicitly recommend using Bookworm whilst the issues with Trixie are ironed out.
