Starting out with PicoVision - what accessories to buy

Hi all,

My son wants to get started with PicoVision, and has asked for the items below and I wanted to understand whether we could replace the LiOn battery pack with other types of battery packs (including standard AA batteries with within a battery holder)?

LiPo SHIM for Pico
Lithium Ion Battery Pack (3.7v)
PicoVision (Pico W Aboard)

LiPo SHIM will only work with LiPo batteries.

It’s also designed to be attached to the back of the Pico so you won’t be able to use it with PicoVision - perhaps something like a USB power bank would work better for this? (We don’t sell those currently, but they’re widely available online).

It looks like the Pico Vision has power in contacts? If so an Amigo Pro may do the job.
LiPo Amigo (LiPo/LiIon Battery Charger)

Thanks, it might be back to the drawing board on his request to have a battery back and batteries. Maybe we need to first start with connection to a DC source.

What do I need to power the PicoVision (but not via LiPo/LiOn)?

Separately if he wants a small display, will it require a separate power source?

A Pi Micro USB power supply should do the trick, when plugged into the Pico onboard.
Raspberry Pi 12.5W Micro USB Power Supply (for Pi Zero 2 W, 3 B+ and earlier)

It’s HDMI out so a spare PC monitor or TV that has HDMI in should work OK.

Are you buying just the Pico Vision or the kit?

Right, after a long chat with the my son, we have concluded that the PicoVision is not for him at this stage. He was inspired by this chap on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnwPmoWMGqk), but it’s a tad advanced for him at this stage. So we will take a step back and look at other things he can do with his Raspberry Pi.

Thanks for responses!

Hi! If you’re looking for something a little simple and more limited, you can do some absolutely amazing stuff with a plasma2040 and some LED lights, if your child is interested in learning how to program in micropython. That would be my suggestion for a first project.
