Followed the guide to set up the pHat beat and it worked fine. However, when I install VLC, the install goes well and it plays for a second before it crashes.
Any reason why this occurs? Also, how do I add my own radio station? I’m a noob when it comes to programming.

Does it crash, or just lose the stream? To find out, change channels and see if it starts working again.
There are a couple of ways to add your own stations. If you make up your own playlist.m3u and put it on the boot partition, it will be auto copied over the default one and become the default.
The other way is to open a terminal and run sudo nano /etc/vlcd/default.m3u. And edit that file.
