Looking for next steps hint for NVME adapter

Hi – I have a PI5 and an NVME adapter with a 970 EVO plus storage board. I’m using this power adapter.

I dtparam=pciex1 to config.txt and added PCIE_PROBE=1 to the eeprom config.

I had a few rounds of wrestling with the adapter. “Hat not detected” which I assume was improperly seated cable. But, I got through that.

Now I’ve moved on to nvme “timeout exceeded”.

I’ve ordered a patriot card cited in a different thread but in the mean time I was wondering if there is anything simple I ought to try in addition?

Now one thing that could be a mistake: I’m booting off a (samsung) ssd via usb, not a card. Is this likely taking too much juice to run both at the same time?

Btw, the timeout is 0x1e08f. I get that whether the ssd is plugged in or if I’m trying to boot directly from the device. (I made the disk images with dd).

And, I just tried a different 970 plus card with the same results. :(
