Due to the newish overlays tree system I do not know how to edit libreelec installation to activate pHATDAC. Can anyone help as to which file I need to edit as I have spent some time on this without success.

Roughly speaking, the phatDAC is the same hardware as a hifiberry. Try following this: https://www.hifiberry.com/build/documentation/libreelec-installation-and-configuration/
