Samsung 2TB 990 Pro -- + Base + ubuntu 24.04

Platform spec:

  • Raspberry Pi 5
  • Ubuntu 24.04 server (only not descktop for the RPI 5) [installed & boots]
  • powered down & attached Pimoroni base & 2TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD
Powered up and the system will not boot. None of PRI 5's on-board
LEDs light up. Appears to be in a completely dead state.
  • I removed the pcie cable and the system will reboot.

Has anyone experience with this condition or ideas as to why this is happening.

Thank you.

What are you using for a Power Supply?

Raspberry Pi’s official 5A power supply adapter.

Ok, then its not that. I asked because people often use what they have on hand, which sometimes is a “charger” not a Power Supply. Chargers often don’t provide a stable +5V under load.

I removed the pcie cable and the system will reboot.

Are you sure the cable is the right way around, as it is in the images on the product page? There’s obviously something not right about the board. What about if you have the Base connected but without the NVME drive?

Good idea. I’ll try that tonight and report results.

When the system leds didn’t light up, Worrying about a short circuit or damage to the rpi, I paniced and pulled the flat cable out. In doing so, the
retention clip popped off.

Today I reset the flat ribbon cable, with the popped off retention clip, which took many attempts, but once seated and powered up the sysetm boots up.

I’ll report later after some usage if the 2TB 990 Samsung Pro NVMe SSD functions reliably.

Thank all who particpated in this thread.
