I’m using the pHAT DAC on Raspberry Zero with Raspbian Stretch. The playback works great but the volume control does not work at all. MPC shows the volume as “n/a” and alsamixer does not show any sound device at all. And idea what I might be missing?

I was able to control the volume following the instructions on https://support.hifiberry.com/hc/en-us/articles/205377202-Adding-software-volume-control
Not quite sure what that does exactly but with that the alsamixer shows a “master” output and the volume can be controlled, while mpc still does not show any volume level on its own.

install Pulseaudio: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=91&t=105487
and you will be able to control the pHAT DAC volume with pavucontrol.
