Recently bought and built a Picade Max which so far is pretty good. Overall I’m happy with it.
I’ve used a Raspberry Pi 5 as I’ve been a fan of Pi’s since v1 (and ARM CPUs since ARM2 :-)
Would like to try some other options in the near future.
Just a few of issues with the kit:
-
Kit was short of 1x M3 12mm screw and 1x M3 nut, was able to use a spare M3 18mm and had a spare (silver) M3 nut, so no biggie.

The input button markings on the USB Picade Input controller do not match the instructions. When setting up my controls in Recalbox, the Start button and X buttons were swapped. I had to switch those buttons physically on the input board. Is this a known issue? ie. Start from the button template was plugged in to Start on the input board but when defining keys it was actually ‘X’ button. This was for both Player 1 and Player 2 buttons. Anyway, fixed now but strange. I installed latest firmware too.

I still can’t figure out how the “big old PC power supply” board works. I own full size and 1U AT & ATX power supplies but none of them can possibly work with this cut out board. A photo in the guide of how to fit an ATX power supply inside the picade would have been nice to give us a clue, or a model number for a PSU that this fits. The motherboard/storage is pointless if we can’t fit a PSU inside. Anyone done this that can share how they laid it out and what power supply they managed to fit in that “big old PC power supply” board that’s included?

When launching a game (only tried MAME and Sega Genesis so far) I see a message pop up briefly at bottom left: “Pimoroni Picade Max (11914/4248) not configured” It has a tick mark at the start of the message. Very confusing. Does that mean it’s not an issue? It is an issue? I’m assuming this is a Recalbox issue. I’ve followed the instructions to the letter and there’s no mention of this error or any configuration step I may have missed. Has anyone else seen this, fixed this?
Thanks
Alan
