Use for an old netbook

Hi,
Just wondering. I have an old Asus netbook computer. Could I load Pi os onto it?

Phil

What CPU does it have?

Do you mean Pi OS as in what a Pi runs or?

Raspberry Pi Desktop for PC and Mac

Debian with Raspberry Pi Desktop is our operating system for PC and Mac. It provides the Raspberry Pi OS desktop, as well as most of the recommended software that comes with Raspberry Pi OS, for any PC or Apple Mac computer.

Hi. Yes. Can I get Pi Os to run on this old netbook. It is an Acer Aspire One Model ZG5
Here are the specifications.Acer Aspire One ZG5 (Linux) Specifications - Notebooks - Entry Level - PC World Australia
It currently runs Bodhi linux sort of OK.
Pretty sure the answer is no.

If it happily takes an install of <random Linux distro>, I can’t imagine any reason Pi Desktop wouldn’t run on it.

Why do you imagine that you can’t?

I thought maybe PI os was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi.
Anybody know where I could get the image file?

Pi Desktop is specifically “our operating system for PC and Mac. It provides the Raspberry Pi OS desktop, as well as most of the recommended software that comes with Raspberry Pi OS, for any PC or Apple Mac computer.”.

It basically gives you the regular Pi desktop and software stack(*) but running on ‘standard’ PCs.

(*) not precisely the same, as it’s a different architecture, but close enough to feel very familiar

Pi OS is specifically designed for the Raspberry Pi.
Raspberry Pi Desktop is the PC version. It’s not Identical to Pi OS but bears a very close resemblance. Same UI and Desktop GUI etc.

I’ve done this in the past (on an Aspire One, forget the model offhand but nothing fancy or powerful) and it worked fine if unspectacularly.

Currently it’s set up with LibreElec and runs as a portable Kodi player linked by wifi to my NAS box (as I didn’t really need yet another laptop).

Acer Aspire running Pi Os

I’ve managed to get it working. Thanks everybody.

Armbian (swing by armbian) for that same debian Linux in a more genaric flavor for all devices.

Kali Linux also offers a feature rich desktop experience with all the tools you may want for many other purposes then just offensive security.
